Just hours after wishing fans a happy Diwali, the man who made millions laugh took his final bow. Veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, known to the world simply as Asrani, passed away on Monday at age 84. The news sent shockwaves through the film industry and left fans mourning across generations.
The Final Curtain Call
Asrani’s manager Babu Bhai Theeba confirmed the sad news. The beloved actor died at 3 PM in Mumbai’s Arogya Nidhi Hospital after battling illness. By 8 PM that same day, his last rites were completed at Santacruz Crematorium through electric cremation.
A Life Full of Laughter
Born January 1, 1940 in Jaipur, Asrani grew up in a middle-class Sindhi family. His father sold carpets, but young Govardhan dreamed of the spotlight. He worked as a voice artist while studying at St. Xavier’s School and Rajasthan College before joining Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1964.
